Abstract

119 serum samples were collected from physiologically restrained rusa deer aged between 16 months to 21 months (27 males and 92 females). Clinical chemistry values were blood urea nitrogen (22.7 ? 3.9 mg/dl), creatinine (0.65 ? 0.09 mg/dl), creatine kinase (290.7 ? 126 U/L), cholesterol (95.0 ? 7.4 mg/dl), glucose (98.0 ? 17.4 mg/dl), amylase (68.8 ? 17.5 U/L), alanine aminotransferase (31.9 ? 3.1 U/L), aspartate aminotransferase (40.7 ? 4.2 U/L), alkaline phosphatase (48.0 ? 8.6 U/L), gamma glutamyltransferase (25.0 ? 4.9 U/L), total bilirubin (1.81 ? 0.59 mg/dl), direct bilirubin (0.37 ? 0.19 mg/dl), total protein (66.7 ? 6.3 g/L), albumin (22.7 ? 3.3 g/ L), and A/G ratio (1:1.8). Electrolyte concentration including calcium (12.6 ? 2.2 mg/dl), phosphorus (14.8 ? 1.7 mg/dl), and magnesium (2.5 ? 0.2 mg/dl) were also reported. The mean of some values (BUN, cholesterol, glucose, amylase, AST, AP, total protein, albumin and globulin) were significant differences ( p < 0.01) between the month of blood collecting. Serum protein electrophoresis of 114 samples were albumin (56.2 ? 7.5%), alpha-globulin (8.4 ? 2.4 %), beta-globulin (11.4 ? 1.4 %) and gamma-globulin (24.1 ? 6.1%). Male deer had higher level of beta-globulin (p < 0.05). There were some season higher levels of total protein, alpha-globulin and gamma-globulin in the November group than in the February group.

Abstract

Blood samples of 45 puff-faced watersnakes (Homalopsis buccata) in the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute were collected from ventral caudal vein for both basic hematology and light microscopic, scanning and transmission electron microscopic features of blood cells. Seventeen samples (37.8%) were positive for hematozoa infections. The single infection of Hepatozoon sp., trypanosome and Haemogregarina sp. was found in 4, 4 and 5 snakes respectively. The other four snakes were infected by both trypanosome and Hepatozoon sp. There were no significant differences of all hematological value between the hematozoa-negative and the hematozoa-positive snakes except fibrinogen concentration which was found higher in the negative group. Lymphocytes were the most commonly observed leukocytes and average 6- 8 ?m in diameter. Azurophils were the second most commonly observed leukocytes, average 10-17 ?m in diameter and might play a major role in eliminating the trypanosome. Heterophils were the largest leukocytes, average 16-19 ?m in diameter and the third commonly observed leukocytes. Eosinophils usually were medium-sized cells, average 10-14 ?m in diameter but in some occasion the very large cells were also detected. Basophils were smaller than heterophils and eosinophils. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the membrane surfaces of normal and abnormal erythrocytes, Hepatozoon sp. infected erythrocytes, thrombocytes, eosinophil and trypanosomes. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the organelles within azurophil, eosinophil, heterophil and trypanosome.

Abstract

During December 1997 to March 2001, 275 blood samples of snakes from eighteen species of four families, including Pythonidae, Colubridae, Elapidae and Viperidae, at Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute were examined for blood parasites. 111 samples (40.4%) were positive for hematozoa infections. The single infection (38.2%) were following genera : Hepatozoon (32.4%), Haemogregarina (4.0%) and trypanosome (1.8%). The incidence rates of mixed infections between Hepatozoon and Haemogregarina and between Hepatozoon and trypanosome were 0.4% and 1.8% respectively. Hepatozoon infections were found in mangrove snake (Boiga dendrophila melanota), mask-faced water snake (Homalopsis buccata), rainbow water snake (Enhydris enhydris), copper head racer snake (Elaphe radiata), common rat snake (Ptyas mucosus), Siamese spitting cobra (Naja siamensis), golden spitting cobra (Naja sumatrana), king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), banded krait (Bungarus fasciatus), Malayan krait (Bungarus candidus), mangrove pit viper (Trimeresurus purpureomaculatus) and Siamese russell’s viper (Daboia russellii siamensis). There were three types of gamont of Hepatozoon sp., including small gamont (3.0 ? 10.9 ?m, n=120), medium gamont (3.3 ? 14.8 ?m, n=60) and the large gamont (3.9 ? 15.0 ?m, n=140). Haemogregarina infections were found in Burmese python (Python molurus bivittatus), mangrove snake, mask-faced water snake and rainbow water snake. The gamonts of Haemogregarina sp. were very large (7.6 ? 15.2 ?m, n=40). Trypanosomes were found only in mask-faced water snake and rainbow water snake. They were large flagelate hematozoa with 10-20 ?m body width (14.1 ? 3.0 ?m, n=120).

Abstract

During June 1994 to December 1995, 1035 canine blood samples submitted to Kamphaengsaen Animal Hospital were examined for blood parasite. 260 samples (25.12%) were positive for blood parasite infections. The single infections were microfilariae 11.78%, Trypanosoma sp. 0.48%, Babesia canis 3.07%, Hepatozoon canis 4.54%, Ehrlichia canis 2.32% and Haemobartonella canis 0.68%. The incidence rate of two and three kind of blood parasite infections were 2.03% and 0.19% respectively. Hematological characteristic of four major groups of infection (babesiosis, microfilariasis, ehrlichiosis and hepatozoonosis) which different from control group (n=35) compared by t-test for independent sample were anemia and lymphopenia. The same characteristic of babesiosis and ehrlichiosis were hypoproteinemia, leukopenia and eosinopenia whereas the different characteristic were neutropenia in babesiosis and monocytosis in ehrlichiosis. The same characteristic of microfilariasis and hepatozoonosis was leukocytosis whereas the different characteristic were hyperproteinemia, neutrophilia and eosinophilia in microfilariasis and eosinopenia in hepatozoonosis. Hematological characteristics of mixed blood parasite infected dogs were mixed characteristics of each infection except neutrophilia with left shift. This study showed that hematological characteristics can be useful in the diagnosis of blood parasite infection in dog.
